The Kosh Coffee small coffee shop design is a passion project initiated by coffee enthusiasts who love coffee and aim to transform their surroundings. Located in a residential area of Almaty, this 18-square-meter coffee shop opened in May, 2024. It quickly became a favorite among locals who appreciate both coffee and minimalist aesthetics. It’s noteworthy that in post-Soviet countries, including Kazakhstan, residential areas are typically places where residents commute daily to and from urban commercial centers or industrial zones, then return home for the night, hence the name "residential area".

These areas have never had particularly well-developed infrastructure. The development of these regions is typically standardized, with housing primarily consisting of typical multi-story panel buildings. The area provides only minimal infrastructure necessary to maintain a basic standard of living, while residents usually travel to other areas, mainly central districts, for work and leisure.

In recent years, this trend has been changing. With the emergence of new residential areas, developers have started offering commercial spaces on the ground floors, providing a solid foundation for entrepreneurs. However, entrepreneurs still tend to avoid significant investments in opening conceptually interesting establishments in these areas. This fear of risk results in interesting, concept-driven, and well-serviced cafes and restaurants remaining concentrated in city centers, while residents of residential areas continue to travel to the city center for leisure.

The concept of the coffee shop is based on the founders' philosophy of premium coffee and minimalist aesthetics, with meticulous attention to detail from the carefully selected coffee bean roasting and grinding methods to the shape and thickness of the cup walls.

We also aimed to convey this approach through the interior design. The coffee shop's interior is quite restrained and calm, utilizing only three materials for decoration—wood, microcement, and tiles. In this way, we wanted to emphasize that the focus of this coffee shop is on the coffee itself, and nothing else should distract the customers.

However, attention to detail is also evident in nearly every square meter of the space. Technically intricate wooden panels, the monolithic concrete bench, curves, rounded corners, and material joints—all these details reflect a careful focus on interior decoration, which in turn mirrors the attention given to the product itself.
