"When we drink, we also drink the moments of the past.
The moments of planting, the moments of harvesting, the moments of fermentation, and the moments of patient brewing."
This new Le Coq Restaurant & Bar is located in Taikoo Li, Pudong, Shanghai. The design is centered around the concept of creating a 'walk-in vineyard,' offering customers a fresh and immersive wine and dining experience.
"An Immersive Winemaking Experience"
RooMoo incorporates the winemaking process into the restaurant space through an abstract interpretation of spatial design language. Wooden grids of various sizes and unique angles "climb" the irregular GRG-shaped walls, dynamically sketching the "branches" of grapevines. LED lights symbolizing grapes "adorn" the branches, creating a vivid and full appearance.
Following the flowing curves of the spiral staircase, the wooden grid "grapevines" gradually transform into shelves for displaying wine in the cellar, seamlessly linking the vitality of nature with the crystallization of human wisdom. This also reflects the designer's thoughtful consideration of space and concept.
The ingenious design of the lighting dimming system allows the lighting colors to change in sync with the time of day. The design of the color-changing LED lights adapts to the different atmospheres within the space, matching various emotional states and offering each guest a unique sensory experience. At the same time, it provides richer inspiration for operations: soft and warm lighting during meals, while the 'pulsing' mode is activated late at night, with flashing lights creating a more relaxed and enjoyable ambiance for guests having a drink. The gradual shift in lighting colors from light to deep also simulates the evolution of grapes from their early stages to ripeness and finally to delicious wine.
"Perceiving a Flowing Space"
To maintain the overall light beige tone, the designer used a significant amount of light beige bricks in the wall design. Interestingly, each brick is arranged in a unique pattern, simulating a sense of movement within the static, enriching the visual experience of the space. It’s as if the wind gently sweeps across the walls, subtly rotating the bricks.
No matter where the guests sit in the restaurant, they will have a distinctly different experience.
Here, warmth is no longer just synonymous with temperature but is a multi-sensory experience created by the design within the space. The dark gray leather panels on the double-height area of the second floor drape the space like a warm blanket, offering guests a comfortable, gentle, and safe experience. Meanwhile, the walls in the sofa area and VIP rooms are treated with dark gray leather, creating a strong contrast with the originally light beige tones of the space. The unique texture of the beige bricks interweaves with the dark leather materials, bringing a distinctly different visual impact. From afar, it adds a touch of modern style to the space; up close, the intricate details and material junctions provide a refined texture.
From the perception of color to the tactile sensation of materials, the designer fully expresses the emotions of the space, highlighting the sense of ceremony and lifestyle sophistication of modern urban dwellers.
"‘Relaxation’ and ‘Refinement’"
“Wine makes our lives more at ease, with less haste and anxiety, and more tranquility.”
This new Le Coq Wine & Bistro seamlessly integrates the functions of a bar and a restaurant. The design of the bar cleverly connects the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a multifunctional gray area that not only attracts customers and provides a visual appeal but also serves as a transitional lounge and relaxation zone for the restaurant. Whether day or night, customers can come here at any time to enjoy a drink or a meal in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
Le Coq Restaurant at Taikoo Li simultaneously fulfills consumers' functional needs for both a restaurant and a bar, while also creating an immersive atmosphere. The design team viewed the owner's request to balance 'relaxation' and 'refinement' as a challenge, blending and intertwining these two seemingly simple yet fundamentally opposite concepts, and carefully interpreting them in the space's overall tone.
The bar located at the street corner of the restaurant's first-floor facade, combined with the wine cellar background of the interior space, presents a unique view. The refined interior design seamlessly blends with the lively outdoor urban landscape, effortlessly attracting passing customers. The integration of the bar with the building's facade also offers great convenience for passersby looking to dine or enjoy a drink. The interior space on the first floor is designed to evoke a warmer, more open atmosphere, while the second floor features fewer seats to maintain privacy, along with two VIP rooms available for guests. The design team aimed to create an immersive experience reminiscent of European sensibilities through the presentation of the space's color palette and the refinement of design details.
Le Coq Restaurant at Taikoo Li offers outdoor dining areas on both floors, where each table is set against a unique backdrop, creating a space filled with ambiance. This design allows customers to fully immerse themselves in the outdoor scenery while enjoying their meals.
